Guitars & Amps for sale

New: FAQ section at the bottom of the page!

Welcome,

guitar players, professionals, collectors, beginners and lovers of all things guitar! My name is Gregor Hilden, I am a guitar player located in Münster, Germany. Also, for many years now, I have been a professional dealer of selected guitars and assorted equipment. I sell by personal appointment or by mail order.

All entries on my inventory are quality instruments only, either vintage, second hand or new. They are meticulously hand selected according to my personal preferences. That means, most are very resonant and light weight instruments that sound excellent and play comfortably. Many are great investments, too, as they will very likely increase in market value. In any case, all guitars offer excellent user value. Customer satisfaction for both players and collectors alike is what I am working for.

If there is any issue with a guitar like refinishes, repairs, non-original parts, or worn out parts, it will be said so in the description of the instrument in question. Those issues will be reflected in the price.

Occasionally, I will upgrade an instrument with better pickups, better hardware, or even have it refretted when I feel it is appropiate to improve its sound, comfort, looks, or general user value (of course it will be written in the description if something has been changed on an instrument). Original parts - if they weren't lost - will be included with the purchase, so that the guitar can be restored to its original state anytime. I will personally set up every instrument professionally (neck angle, neck relief, string action, intonation, pickup height, etc.) including a new set of strings with the string gauge of your choice.

For security reasons I do not keep all these guitars at my home! But it is no problem to check out the guitars you are interested in by appointment

However, you can check out any instrument by appointment either at my place here in Münster, Germany, or in a rehearsal room, if an amp needs to be cranked. Just give me a call or send a mail.

Prices:

All prices are given in Euros (€) and include all required taxes.

If you live outside the European Union, the price can be reduced by 19 %, if the guitar's price explicitly includes turnover tax (check the price list below). Also, the tax can be deducted if you are a professional musician, a dealer or other music pro with a valid tax ID.

Prices will usually reflect current average market value (dealer prices). I will not attempt to disguise the fact that I am trying to make a profit here, as I am sometimes "accused" of - I am a pro dealer with a registered trade. I  payed for all instruments on my stock list at my own financial risk. I spend many hours a day to find great instruments, original spare parts, and accessories. I take a lot of time and patience to check if an instrument and its parts are original etc. (which often requires to take an instrument apart) and take fotos of everything. I perform whatever maintenance work seems necessary, put everything back together, set the guitar up and restring it. Then I will produce videos of the guitars for sale (that alone is € 1200 per month for my camera man!), so that everybody can get a good first impression without having to come by. Additionally, there is the task of keeping the website up and running, staying in contact with musicians, providers, customers, etc. Also there are import taxes, customs charges, shipping costs, turnover taxes and many more things to be payed :(

What I am trying to say is, I love guitars and I put a lot of effort into my trade. I take pride in what I do and I am trying to provide you with possibly the best piece of equipment your budget allows for. I can also spare you the risks usually associated with the purchase of vintage or second hand guitars - but I could not do so if my business would not support me.

Contact

There is no e-shop system with my website, if you are interested in anything specifically or want to make an appointment, simply give me a call or send a mail:

phone: +49 251 524802
email: hilden@muenster.de

You are welcome to ask any questions about the items for sale, I will try to answer as soon as I can. Please understand that I can not take the time anymore to answer questions like "Do you think Mexican Fenders are better than Korean Epiphones" or "What's your favourite stompbox under $ 100?" I understand that the casual and informal way of internet communication is inviting to ask anything you ever wanted to know about guitars. However, I get about 150 emails a day (!) just like this, it would take many hours each day just to respond to all these general questions. That is simply impossible to do. However, questions related to items on my inventory I'll try to answer quickly.

Also, please DO NOT SEND ANY EMAIL ATTACHMENTS (pics, videos, sound clips, whatever) UNLESS I ASKED YOU TO! This kind of data can take up an awful lot of space and fill up my mail box in no time - important messages often do not get through. Thank you for your kind understanding.

Payment & Shipping

For customers living OUTSIDE of the European Union, prices can be reduced by 19% - applies only to prices that are explicitly tagged "incl. 19% turnover tax"! Just send a mail, so I can come back to you and see what I can do.

Occasionally, I will buy or trade in quality guitars and guitar equipment. If you have items to offer, please list them as detailed as you can and tell me what prices you are asking for - I do not do appraisals, I will not "ask" or "inquire for a quote" or "make an offer". Please decide what you are asking for - I will come back to you. Again, do not send attachments unless I asked you to.

If you want to carefully check out and pick the guitar or piece of equipment you are interested in, please contact me me for an appointment here in Münster, Germany. However, if that should not be possible, I will have about anything shipped to about any place in the world safely packaged - right after I recieved your payment. I will only charge you the real shipping costs - for instance, shipping a guitar within the EU is about € 20-30. Tell me where you need your articles sent to and I'll send you a quote.

Note of the Webmaster / International Site

Greg updates his stock list frequently, often every day. As soon as a new item comes in, photos and video clips are recorded, he puts it on his website. To prevent costs, I cannot do that - so I agreed with Greg to update the English version of the stock list once a week, usually on a weekend. Unfortunately, some instruments sell very quickly (especially Les Pauls) and I cannot bother to translate lengthy comments of intstruments that are not available anymore. Therefore, if you want to watch the videos of ALL guitars that ever were for sale, go to Greg's YouTube channel "GregsGuitars". If you want to see always the newest entries to get a chance to purchase one, go to the German version of the stock list - you will get the most important information anyway (model name, upgrades, price etc.). For anything else, you can contact Greg by mail or phone.

That's it for the prelude, here comes the inventory :)

2011 Gibson Les Paul Traditional Goldtop. Upgraded with Gibson Burstbucker 1 and 2 pickups, aged Faber ABR '59 bridge w/ aged conversion studs, aged Faber aluminium locking tailpiece, aged 59-style knobs, metal pointer washers, brown switch tip, Gibson Historic Collection 59 trussrod cover (original kobs, trussrod cover, and switch tip come included!) 1974 Gibson Les Paul Custom. Cherry sunburst. A real beauty with 1992comfortable weight (!) Still with all the desirable early 70s appointments: black sticker Pat.No. humbuckers, gold plated ABR-1 bridge and aluminium tailpiece, waffle back tuners. The original frets are worn low - you can still play them, but I would recommend a refret with nice jumbo frets. At additional costs of € 200, I can have that done for you. Excellent condition, the case is somewhat rocked, but still works fine. First and foremost: Fantastic sound! Price: € 3,990 - comes with original case. This was the best qwuality guitar Gibson offered back then, as the Gibson Custom Shop was introduced in 1993. Early 90s Les Pauls will definitely pick up in prices, and they are great choices for professional live and studio works: I used one on my recording of "Slabo Day " from my CD "Sweet Rain" (out-of-phase in the middle position). Price: € 1,798 - comes with original brown case. Fotos1 Fotos2 Video1 Video2

Accessories

New: ChickenPick guitar picks. For many years (and thousands of YT videos) i have used Dunlop Delrin 500 2mm picks, and I did not think that I would ever change that. But now it actually happened as I found the new, fantastic ChickenPick picks. Made from a new, extremely durable material, these heavy and stiff picks feel comfortable and sound great - clearer and with a wider frequency range than standard picks. There is a try-out set with three different shapes and gauges, the "regular" 2.6mm being my favorite. Once you found your favourite variant, you can order just that from me, as I am an official ChickenPick dealer from now on! Link to the ChickenPick website. Try Out Set (3 different types: Shredder 3.5mm / Regular 2.6mm / Light 2.2mm) € 15.50 (plus shipping) Fotos Videos  Here are two videos featuring the same Fano SP-6 guitar, amp and setup comparing the Regular 2.6mm ChickenPick to the Dunlop Delrin 500 - crank the volume some and listen through quality speakers or headphones, and you should be able to hear the difference: Video (with ChickenPick) Video (with Dunlop pick)

NEW: Leather Guitar Straps. Great quality, real leather straps made in Europe! Width: 6cm (just right), soft and flexible (easier to attach and reattach than stiff leather varieties), suede inside (so slightly neck-heavy guitars won't slip down your shoulder as easily). Available in black, brown and tan. Price: € 39,90 (incl. 19% turnover tax).

Darco (by Martin) electric guitar strings, nickel wound. Affordable strings made by Martin in Mexico. These are just as good as any other brand - I put them on all my guitars! My own gauge preference is 11-14-18-28-38-49, sets of 10s or 09s are available as well. Since I purchase large quantities, I can offer best prices (minimum purchase 12 sets)! Price: € 2.90 / set (incl. 19% turnover tax) Foto

Pickups

LeoSounds

Handwound pickups made in Germany - which give other high priced boutique makers a run for the money! I am proud to introduce my first Gregor Hilden signature pickup (as available in my Helliver Gregor Hilden signature guitar), exclusively produced by LeoSounds!

LeoSounds Vintage Player "Gregor Hilden Signature", calibrated set. This is what a great PAF replica should sound like: Refined, sweet, transparent, and with a great sense of detail. Out-of-phase in the middle position (just like Peter Green's old Les Paul). And yes, of course these are modeled after the sound of the original Gibson PAF and Pat.No. humbuckers in my favourite 1968 Les Paul goldtop (converted to 50s specs)! True to vintage PAF specs, my Signatures are not wax-potted, so watch out for feedback in high gain settings. They come with aged nickel plated German silver (no treble loss!) covers by default. By request, unaged covers and non-out of phase sets are available! Price: € 219 / set (incl. 19% turnover tax). David Barfuss

Another German maker of fine handwound boutique pickups, David Barfuss is an experienced guitarist himself who is still playing many gigs per year! He definitely knows what a pickup needs to sound and feel like! He started getting into the craft when the pickups of his 73 stratocaster needed to get a rewind. Here are some of his tasteful sets, the Greeny Blues set - patterned after the sound of Peter Green's legendary Les Paul with original PAFs wired out-of-phase - being one of my personal favourites:

David Barfuss Greeny Blues set. Calibrated bridge and neck humbucker pickups with nickel plated German silver covers (note: German silver is the name of an alloy - actually, it is neither German, nor silver! As opposed to regular brass covers, German silver will not alter the sound in any way!) Price: € 210 / set (incl. 19% turnover tax) with nickel plated German silver covers. 190 with open coils (add € 25 for gold plated covers) Foto Video Video1 Video2 Video3 (Here the Greenies rock out in an SG:) Video4 (Another two clips featuring less gain:) Video5 Video6

Amber

Did you know that the inventor of the P-90-in-humbucker format - later licensed as the Gibson P-94 - is German? After 16 years as product manager for Gibson, Wolfgang Damm returned home to fully commit himself to his new enterprise, Amber pickups. These handwound pickups with an incredible attention to detail set a new standard in the boutique pickup world - pricey, but very, very good!

Amber Gregor Hilden Edition Aged Surf-Style Set. Outstanding handwound, extremely accurate aged vintage-style Stratocaster pickup replicas. First edition of 5 sets. Individually numbered sets. The unique feature of my signature edition is a reduced pole-piece staggering. With modern string gauges, unwound G strings, and flatter 9,5" fretboard radiuses string-to-string balance is much improved! Also, the middle pickup comes non-reversed which makes for more authentic in-between sounds in positions #2 and #4! Covers, magnets, and screws come authentically aged. Price: € 349 / set (incl. 19% turnover tax), comes with original certificate. Here they come in a rather bright sounding Tokai Strat with a 50s style maple neck - in a '60-style Strat with a rosewood fretboard they will sound significantily warmer: Video2 Video3 Video4

Amber 1959 PAF Limited Edition Aged Nickel Set. Outstanding handwound, calibrated, extremely accurate aged PAF replicas in a limited edition with aged nickel plated German silver covers. OKKO

It is not a secret, my absolute preference in overdrive/distortion pedals is the OKKO Diablo, hand built by German boutique maker OKKO in Leipzig. I use this pedal on every gig I play, you can hear it on my DVD "Live at the Luna Bar" and on hundreds of my YouTube videos. This overdrive is probably the best I ever played - and I think I played them all, including rare and expensive boutique pedals like the Klon Zentaur, Hermida Zen Drive etc. I might try something else every now and then, just for a change - but I'm always coming back to the Diablo! I am so impressed with the quality of the OKKO pedals that I decided to always keep some in stock - so you don't have to wait the usual 2-3 months delivery period!

OKKO Diablo. Standard version, high-gloss powder coated orange only (The earlier custom order hand painted models were too time-consuming to produce. They already are rare collector's items!) True bypass, fully discrete circuitry - no ICs involved! High quality components only - Alpha pots, Neutrik jacks, high performance capacitors and resistors, etc. Switches, pots and jacks are wired point-to-point. The Diablo's sound is reminiscent of old plexi Marshall amps from mild crunch to singing lead sounds. It absolutely retains the sound of your guitar, it is incredibly dynamic and transparent and reacts extremly sensitive to your guitar's volume control or changes of pick attack. "Feed" controls low mids to either fatten up your tone or to reduce mush. "Body" is a bass control, "Gain" lets you dial in the desired amount of overdrive. "Tone" lets covers a wide range from dark to bite, but never harsh. Level is the master volume control. The Headroom switch selects between 9V and 18V - the lower voltage is softer and subtly compressed, the higher one is more dynamic and offers more headroom. Price: € 199 (incl. 19% turnover tax), full manufacturer's warranty. Fotos Here are hundreds of clips with vintage Vibrolux or Vibroverb amps - in most clips the Diablo's gain is set low for a nice blues sound: Videos

OKKO Diablo Gain+ This version features an extra gain control and an extra footswitch to select between two different gain settings - great to shift up gears in the middle of a solo, for example. Bernie Marsden (former Whitesnake guitarist) bought one after he and I played a couple of gigs together! Price: € 239 (incl. 19% turnover tax), full manufacturer's warranty. Videos featuring the Gain+

OKKO TwinSonic. This is a pedal for guitar players who prefer lower gain, Fender or Dumble-style sounds. Like the Diablo Boost+, the TwinSonic features seperate overdrive and clean boost sections, each with their own independent level controls and footswitches. You can either use the boost to achieve a louder clean solo or rhythm sound (if your amp is set clean) - or you can use it to push vintage tube amps that are set on the verge of break-up into saturation. Additionally, you can kick in overdrive section (which produces the most saturation), or use it by itself. The TwinSonic also features a unique Vox-like Cut control to reduce high end. Now if you turn up the Tone control as you turn down the Cut control, the pedal produces a punchy, midrangy Dumble-style sound! Price: € 249 (incl. 19% turnover tax), full manufacturer's warranty. Videos

OKKO Dominator. The latest OKKO creation will appeal to guitarists in need of something real heavy. The Dominator has tons of gain and can produce even heaviest metal sounds. But it will just as well provide beautiful Dumble-like lead sounds with the gain control turned down! Price: € 209 (incl. 19% turnover tax), full manufacturer's warranty. Fotos1 Fotos2 Video1 Video2

OKKO CocaComp. Probably the best compressor pedal I know of. The Sing control dials in the amount of compression, while Push handles volume level. If you turn down the Sing control and turn up Push, the CocaComp makes an excellent clean boost pedal, too. Price: € 159 (incl. 19% turnover tax), full manufacturer's warranty. Foto

Vahlbruch

Recently I was approached by a German engineer who was trying to wake my interest in his line of boutique pedals. These things happen more and more often lately, so I was less than enthusiastic at first - until I tried the Jewel Drive overdrive pedal! The decision to market these top quality pedals on my website was quick and easy. And when I got to play the new Chorus pedal, it went straight on my main pedal board. So here are a few of the truly outstanding Vahlbruch pedals:

Vahlbruch Jewel Drive. This overdrive pedal features two independent gain stages („Drive" and „Drive+") with seperate adjustable gain and volume controls. For example, you can dial in a crunchy rhythm sound and a louder, saturated lead sound at just the perfect volume balance. Or how about the other way round? A heavily saturated, but relatively quiet rhythm and a cleaner but louder solo sound? No problem. The Jewel Drive's amazing sound is extremely natural and has a great singing quality - perfect for Joe Bonamassa or Gary Moore-style sounds, for example. Unique to the Jewel drive is the Timbre control which adjusts a specially shaped range of midrange frequencies. In my videos the Timbre control is set to "11", i.e. mids are just slightly scooped, which produces a beautifully juicy attack. All Vahlbruch pedals are completely handbuilt in Germany. Recently, the Jewel Drive recieved a rave review in Germany's No. 1 guitar magazine Gitarre & Bass! Price: € 254 (incl. 19% turnover tax), free shipping! Fotos Videos

Vahlbruch Saphhire Drive. Now available. Similar to the Jewel Drive and just as amazing, but with more gain. Price: € 254 (incl. 19% turnover tax), free shipping! Fotos Videos

Vahlbruch Space Time Delay. Fantastic handmade delay pedal that I've been using a lot recently. Analog/Digital circuitry, max. 660ms of delay. Price: € 195 (incl. 19% turnover tax). Fotos In this video, the mix level is set a lot higher than I usually would have it: Video1 Here's a great video demonstrating the varoius settings: Video2

Vahlbruch Chorus. Simply the best chorus pedal I have ever heard - and I have heard them all :) It went straight on my main pedal board, which hasn't seen a chorus pedal in a very long time and doesn't have room for more than 3 or 4 pedals, anyway! Handbuilt, 100% analog, true bypass etc. Like all Vahlbruch pedals, outstanding quality! Price: € 249 (incl. 19% turnover tax), free shipping! Foto Video1 Video2 Video3  Here the chorus comes in later in the clip: Video4

Vahlbruch Phaser. I never really was a fan of those 70s phaser sounds, but this top-quality, German-made boutique model is a really fantastic and useful pedal: From a subtle fattening of your sound to psycehedelic Robin Trower-approved Univibe swirls to fast Danny Gatton-style Leslie swirls, every setting sounds great! Price: € 235 (incl. 19% turnover tax). Wampler

Wampler PlexiDrive. As the name suggests, an overdrive pedal reminiscent of old Marshall sounds with a great blend of warmth and clarity. Port City Sahana Boost. Fantastic overdrive pedal from the US boutique amp maker. Reminscent of the legendary Hermida Zendrive, this one features a much better, less boxy sound than the Zendrive and is a lot easier to adjust (not moving the controls by fractions of inches). In my opinion, this pedal could become an intstant classic! Price: € 198 (incl. 19% turnover tax). Video1 Video2 Great videos by Tom Quayle: Video

My Personal Guitars

1968 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop Converted to 50s Specs w/ PAFs. My personal all-time favourite guitar! This heavily modified battered bastard originally featured P-90 pickups, but was routed out to accommodate humbucker pickups. Now it is the home for an original old PAF in the neck position and an original ’63 Patent Number at the bridge. One previous owner also had weight relief chambers routed into the body – not exactly an example of fine Gibson craftsmanship, but in a rather crude way: holes were drilled into the body from the back and then covered with a thick bottom veneer. However, the veneer work is not easily detectable. Additionally, the headstock has been broken several times (expert luthier Boris Dommenget performed the final bullet-proof headstock restauration); a third pickup cavity had been routed in the middle position and refilled again; a Bigsby vibrato system had been installed and removed again; several refrets have been performed – this guitar has been through it all! The sound is just divine – somewhere in between a Les Paul and an ES-335. The neck shape is perfect, like an original ’59. And the guitar weighs in at only 3.8 kgs! The curious thing about it is that this guitar was part of a trade-in deal when I sold my original 1959 Les Paul Standard (Video) many years ago – the ’59 being the more valuable and revered guitar for most. But as soon as I picked up the goldtop, it immediately felt like “my” guitar – and it took me only 2 seconds to realize that it would be my main guitar for the rest of my life! This gorgeous goldtop has been featured extensively on many of my CDs and on my DVD “Live at the Luna Bar” and it proudly stars the cover of my instrumental CD “Golden Voice Blues” Fotos1 Fotos2 (by Manfred Pullert – the Nashville bridge has been replaced with an original old ABR-1 bridge since) Video1 (With original Dumble Overdrive Special ODS 100) Video2 (With original 1968 silverface / alu frame Fender Vibrolux Reverb) Video3 (with 1963 Vibroverb). 2010 Gibson Custom Shop Collector's Choice #1: Gary Moore / Melvyn Franks 1959 Les Paul Standard, Tom Murphy Aged (aka "Greeny") The Collector's Choice Series from the Gibson Custom Shop recreates singular, legendary and well documented vintage Les Pauls in strictly limited editions. The CC#1 is especially outstanding as it currently belongs to renowned English collector Melvyn Franks, but it previously was owned by Peter Green who used it on most of his classic Fleetwood Mac recordings, and later by Gary Moore who bought it from Green in the 70s and used it on many famous Thin Lizzy recordings and his Peter Green tribute album "Blues For Greeny". It features a highly figured top, a faded "Unburst Butterscotch" finish and Burstbucker 3 pickups, the neck pickup of course wired out-of-phase for Peter Green's signature, gorgeously nasal "Need Your Love So Bad"-tone! This is an absolutely amazing guitar and my current No. 2! At only 3.8 kgs it is one of the lightest of the strictly limited edition of 125 only. According to my taste, I performed a few cosmetic changes (turning the neck pickup back to its original position, installing four of the same ‘60s style reflector knobs and adding a pickguard) – but the guitar can be restored to its authentic Peter Green look anytime in only a few minutes! Interesting fact about the neck: I had VOS Melvyn Franks / Gary Moore LPs before (Video1and Video2), and each of which came with a different neck profile. But this is the first Reissue / Historic LP I've come across with the exact dimensions of my original 1959 sunburst I once owned! Fortunately, the back of the neck looks a lot nicer than the Gibson promotion fotos suggest. However, like all Historics after 2002 and all Gibsons with PLEK-machined frets (after 2006), this one comes with extremly low frets. Not very comfortable, if you prefer 11 gauge strings like me. But I practice a lot on this guitar and when I pick up a guitar with nice tall frets afterwards, playing feels like a breeze ... UPDATE: Recently I replaced the burstbucker pickup covers with super authentic aged DMC covers, which have the proper rounded corners, see: Fotos1 Fotos2 But first of all, the tone of this guitar is just out of sight! 1952 Gibson Les Paul Std. All gold. At first, the only thing I had about this guitar was fotos - and I had it to buy it right away! Well, if the pics already oozed tons of mojo, the real thing does even more so! The neck shape is just a dream, the finish on the neck has been removed, and it feels just fantastic (However, I will have it refretted, soon). The sound is just SWEET - totally out of sight! At one time, it had had a trapeze tailpiece, but now it features a stop tailpiece, and it looks absolutely gorgeous. Someone has sprayed parts of the original case gold - funky! Fortunately, the original tuners and a CITES certificate came included. Fotos1 Fotos2 Fotos3 Video1 Video2

1964 Gibson SG Standard. Previously owned by German guitar legend Alex Conti (Atlantis, Lake, Hamburg Blues Band etc.) who used it for many, many years on lots of tours and recordings. CITES certificate included. Fotos1 Fotos2 Fotos3 Video1 Video2 Video3

1968 Gibson SG Special. What a funky little brat - and truly a "player" guitar! There are a few stress cracks in the body, but everything feels tight, nothing moves. The tuners have been replaced at one time. The polepieces of one of the pickups look a little newer than the other one - however, I did not check, because I did not want to take the entire guitar apart. I don't care anyway, at least one of the pickups looks original, and both sound fantastic. The neck feels a little like an elephant's trunk - just great. I had it refretted with nice jumbo frets and added a 70s case and a period correct wrap-around bridge from my stock (currently installed is a compensated aluminium bridge that sounds great). 1964 Gibson ES-335, cherry. Previously owned by Bernie Marsden (of Whitesnake fame) and Jefferson Airplane! Bernie played this guitar for more than twenty years, you can hear him play it on his CD “Big Boy Blue” and on his live DVD. Bernie had bought it from the guitarist of Jefferson Airplane. The original Bigsby has been removed. It seems that at one time there had been a mini switch between the pots, but the little hole has been professionally repaired. With original case, a personal letter from Bernie Marsden, a signed Bernie Marsden poster, Bernie Marsden CD, and original foto prints in A4 format. Fotos1 Fotos2 Fotos3 Here Bernie still owns and plays the guitar: Video1 Video2 My videos: Video-NEW Video2 Live-Video1 Live-Video2 Live-Video3

1967 Gibson ES-355. Refinished black, Bigsby removed, converted to stop tailpiece, the controls cavity was routed out from the back of the body (great idea ...) – a collector’s nightmare, but a true player's instrument with an outstanding sound – featured on “Daydream” from my CD “Blue in Red”. 1969 Gibson ES-335, Ice Tea Sunburst. Original trapeze tailpiece replaced with a stop tailpiece, refretted, reliable reissue tuners installed, pickups wired out-of-phase in the middle position. 2003 Gibson Custom Shop 1959 ES-335 Historic Collection. This one previously belonged to John Norum, the guitarist of the band "Europe". I bought it from a Swedish dealer at the 2011 Oldenburg Vintage Show and played it at a jam session the very same evening (see Video, demonstrating its unplugged sound, too ... ;) - and right away three different persons asked if I would care to sell it. 1966 Epiphone Sheraton (made by Gibson USA). Wine Red, gold-plated hardware. Indian rosewood fretboard. The original mini humbuckers have been replaced with Gibson PAF reissues for a bigger, more ES-335-like sound. Wired out of phase as found on many 60s Epiphone and Gibson Semis. Fotos1 Fotos2 Video1 Video2

1966 Epiphone Riviera (made by Gibson USA). Absolutely charming, and all original, except for a professional refret, as these very low profile vintage frets are pretty hard to play. Indian rosewood fretboard, nice neck profile. The pickups are wired out-of-phase in the middle position, a feature that can be found on many 60s Rivieras as well as on many 60s ES-345s and 355s. Comes with original case. Fotos1 Fotos2 Video1 Video2 Video3

2009 Helliver "Gregor Hilden Signature Model" Handbuilt in Germany - My first signature guitar turned out to be a truly outstanding instrument and I am really proud of it! The body shape is reminiscent of 70ies Zemaitis guitars, but future models will come with a slightly smaller upper bout. The pickups are handwound Leosounds Gregor Hilden Signature PAFs (which are seperately available, too - see "pickups"). This is a light weight guitar at only 3.8 kgs and if you want one, too, you can order it direct at Helliver Guitars - individual requests for color, neck shape and other features are welcome! 1971 Fender Telecaster. Olympic White (heavily yellowed with age), rosewood fretboard. 100% original except for a professional refret, fantastic looks, light weight and with a solid dose of glorious, super authentic, Danny-Gatton approved tele bite! A light-weight early 70s Tele is just as great as a late 60s one and prices are rising all the time!  Fotos1 Fotos2 Video

1974 Fender Thinline Telecaster. Olympic White. Featuring 2 Wide Range Humbuckers (developed by Seth Lover!) Several years I ago, I sold a fantastic early 70s sunburst Thinline Tele to my friend Todd Sharpville. I would have loved to keep it for myself, but I realized it was a perfect match for a rock'n'roll player like Todd, and it is actually still his main guitar: Video Ever since I've been looking for another one for myself and now I found a beautiful example in a nice yellowed Olympic White. I had it refretted with Dunlop 6105 frets and now it is real fun! Fotos1 Fotos2 Fotos3 Video1 Video2 (Video3 mit Brunetti Singleman Amp)

1996 Fender Custom Shop 1950 Telecaster. I purchased this one at Uli Kurtinat’s shop in 1996. It was featured on many of my CDs – the nicest example being “Beale Street Strut” from “Westcoast Blues”. Also, this guitar brings back fond memories of extensive touring with Big Jay McNeely. The "1950" designation is somewhat odd, because a sunburst finish is anything but typical for a tele of this vintage. Just like Gibson, it took the Fender Custom Shop decades to get their own history straight. However, I never cared much if every little detail on a reissue guitar is historically correct -I care if it sounds and plays great, and this one does! 2010 Fender Custom Shop 50s Custom Telecaster Relic. Two Tone Sunburst, double body bindings, as body, maple neck. Small neck profile, 9.5" fretboard radius, Dunlop 6105 frets. Light weight and resonant! Fotos1 Fotos2 Video1

2010 Fender Custom Shop 1952 Telecaster Relic w/ Neck Humbucker. In 2010, I sold this guitar when it was brandnew. Now I had the opportunity to buy it back and this time I will keep and play it for while - chances are, I keep it for good! Fotos1 Fotos2 Fotos3 Fotos4 Video1 Video2 Video3 Video4

Danelectro Baritone. A great unique sound for rhythm parts or the occasional solo in the studio (see „Milestones“ or „Baritone Boogaloo“ from my CD „Golden Voice Blues“) Ever since I heard Danny Gatton’s solos on his CD “New York Stories” I wanted a baritone – now I’ve got one: Video

2007 Gretsch Chet Atkins 6120. The classic Gretsch model in orange. There is an original 1962 Filtertron pickup in the bridge position. The Melita bridge has been replaced with a better sounding original Gretsch bar bridge, the guitar has been refretted with nice tall jumbo frets, and nice waffle back tuners have been installed. I had sold this guitar in January 2011 and when I wrapped it up, I got this feeling, "maybe I should have kept this one". Well, I get the same feeling with every other guitar I sell ... Well, one year later, in January 2012, I had the opportunity to trade it back in for a stratocaster, and I decided to keep it this time, and sell the Tennessean instead. Unfortunately, that same feeling comes up again ... Fotos1 Fotos2  Video1 Video2 Video3 Video4 Video5

2005 Gibson J-185 EC Jumbo. Features a Fishman Prefix On-Board system. Previous owner was Alex Auer – greetings! The headstock was broken at one time, but after Boris Dommenget’s professional repair it is hardly detectable. Fotos1 Fotos2 Fotos3 Video1 Video2 Video3

18?? Parlour Nylonstring Guitar. In 1992, I found this stunning, richly decorated acoustic guitar in a tiny shop in Praha. After I had played the guitar for a while in the shop, the old owner offered to give it to me as a gift! Of course, I kindly refused and insisted to pay for the guitar. A little later around lunch break on Karl’s Bridge I decided to have another look at the guitar in day light and play it a little – and right away I get arrested for performing street music without a license and taken to one of the stone towers by the end of the bridge! After a lengthy discussion with the officer on duty I was set free again. Fotos

1968 Fender Vibrolux Reverb. My No. 1 Amp for live gigs ! Silverface Aluframe. My absolute favourite stage amp, featured on my live DVD "Live At The Lunar Bar". 40W, 2 x 6L6, 2 x 10” Oxford speakers, all original, except for a few replaced caps. 1963 Fender Vibroverb. Brown Tolex. This is the amp from all my current YouTube guitar demos! All original. 40W, 2 x 6L6, 2 x 10” Oxford speakers. The 90s reissues don’t even come close. Amazingly round and musical tone, a little warmer than the Vibrolux amps. I used this one on hundreds of my guitar demos on YouTube These '63 Vibroverbs are exceedingly rare, they are about $ 9,000 - 13,000 in the US - if you can find one. This one has been equipped with a professional 230V transformer, and can be changed back to original 110V without problems. Fotos1 Fotos2 Fotos3

The cabinet took it without a problem despite the low wattage rating of the speakers. The cabinet sounds great with other amps, too! By the way, the Dumble has been sold since – actually a pity ... FAQ:

How do you record the YouTube videos?

I have two signals: One coming from the guitar amp, miked with an AKG D-320 B microphone (which picks up the loops from the Boss RC-2 looping pedal, too), the other being a line-out with backing tracks stored on my PC. Both signals feed a cheap Behringer Xendix 1002 FX mixer (sometimes I add a bit of reverb - preset No. 7 from the mixer - great sounding reverb!). A line-out from the mixer (with both signals mixed) runs direct into the Sony FX-1 camera, which records everything at the same time. That's it. I do not use any recording software. I don't do the editing and cutting (the camera man Stefan is doing that, I don't know wich software he is using). There is no post-production on the sound!

What are the backing tracks on your videos?

I collected the backing tracks used in my demo videos from the web over many years. I bought most of them from commercial pages like Jamtrackscentral or Guitarbackingtracks and many others!! Sorry, there is no way I can remember which track came from which site. When I find a nice track I'll simply store it on my computer and don't bother to make a list ... too many tracks, too many sites. I could not even find a single requested track on my computer (10,000+ tracks) Therefore, please do a Google seach for "blues backing tracks" or "jam tracks" and you will find a lot by yourself.

Recently, a number of backing tracks were sent to me or even made especially for me. Only in this case (or if I bought a track from a site and the credit was part of the deal) I take care to credit the producer of the track. So you might want to check the info text below the video - some of the tracks are available directly from the producer.

What are your favourite strings and picks?

I use either Darco (by Martin) or Elixir Nanoweb roundwound strings. Guitars that are up for sale are set up with 10-46 gauges, my personal guitars are set up with 11-49s. My picks are 2mm Dunlop Delrin 500s.

What are your amp and pedal settings?

I record at bedroom levels, bass and treble controls on my amp are set to 5, volume to about 1-2, reverb about 2 or 3, bright switch off  (and in case you are wondering, vintage Fender amps as my original 1963 "brownface" Vibroverb or my blackface and silverface Vibroluxes do not have gain or middle controls).

On my OKKO Diablo Gain+ overdrive pedal, the three tone controls "feed", "body" and "tone" (bass, middle and treble, respectively) are usually set to 12h (I may vary that little, but not by much). Gain settings vary from about 9h for bluesy low gain sounds to about 12h for a bit more rocking sound. If you turned up the bass, middle and gain knobs more than I do, you'd get sounds that are a lot fatter and with more compression/sustain in a good marshally way, which many players favour. I, however, prefer the subtlety and transparence of the lower settings.

I have used various delay pedals in the past and currently I'm really happy with the German made Vahlbruch Spacetime Delay. Generally, I go for just a little added ambience, not for a dedicated echo effect. Hence I set the pedal to a longish delay time of about 500ms, and I turn the repeat and mix  controls way down.

The Boss RC-2 looper is only used to occasionally record a simple chord progression as a backing. If you hear full-band backing tracks, they run from my PC into the mixer, rather than from the looper through the guitar amp (which would sound quite horrible).

Can you do a review of guitar XY?

No, I cannot do videos by request. I can only present those guitars that are up for sale or that are part of my personal collection because I actually purchase all guitars presented on my channel.

Did you ever demo guitar XY?

Go to my YouTube channel GregsGuitars and use the little search box to find out. I have demoed thousands of guitars so far, but I select guitars according to my personal taste. There is the occasional oddball or mutt, but most are classic designs and chances are, you won't find your favourite metal axe.

Of all the guitars you have had, which is your favourite?

My all-time favourite guitar - my absolute No. 1 for life - is a heavliy battered and chambered 1968 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop, converted to 50s specs, featuring original vintage PAF and Pat.No. humbuckers. Scroll up to My Personal Guitars to find it described in detail.

Why do you use always the same amp and pedal setup?

I occasionally do record a different amp or pedal, but cut down the amp and pedal business. So I just use what I have around the house and what I really like. I need to record demos quickly, and I simply cannot afford the time to borrow a pile of amps to produce any classic sound a guitar is capable of. Also, IMO using the same setup provides a reliable framework to get an idea about the individual guitars.

Why do you always play in the same style?

Depending on my mood and on which kind of backing tracks I have found recently, my demos vary from bluesy to jazzy to funky to even reggae or rock styles, but not in a systematic or organized way. It seems I developed a taste for certain kinds of grooves and sounds, and I developed a certain playing style, too - whenever I play, I sound like me. And my playing will be always blues based because that is where I'm coming from and what I built my career on.

IMHO, slow blues is a great way to present what a guitar can do in terms of expressiveness, dynamics, touch sensivity, overtones, sustain etc. If a guitar can do all that well, it will excel at all other musical styles, too.

Also, I need to record my demos quickly as I am always short of time, that's why I want them to be loose and spontanous, rather than planned out. That way I can record demos every week, year after year, without getting tired of it. I am sorry, if I don't meet your personal musical preference, but there are thousands of other YT channels for that ...

Your guitars all sound the same ...

Remember that YouTube puts quite some compression on the videos and limits the bandwidth considerably - I cannot help that. But sometimes it simply helps to crank the volume some and play the videos through a better sound card, better speakers or better headphones. You might be surprised what you've missed so far.

Sometimes my pedal setup is blamed for making everything sound the same, but I have to disagree. My pedals are of high quality only with true bypass switches and discrete circuits (except for the looper, but those Boss pedals offer excellent buffering instead) for best sound quality with as little coloration as possible. For almost every guitar, I record either one clip clean all the way through, or at least a part of a clip will be clean (i.e. no overdrive). My delay is rolled way down, just to add a little ambience. Also, my overdrive pedal, the OKKO Diablo, is set to fairly low gain settings. While the OKKO does colour the sound a little bit (think of a refined low-gain vintage Marshall sound), it is the most transparent and dynamic OD I've ever come across so far, and it certainly does not mask the sound. I only use it to emulate the sound of an amp slightly cranked, since I can only record at bedroom levels in my apartment. IMHO, this is a true real-life application as I would set up my guitar sound like this for a studio recording or a live gig. Very few guys record or play their guitars completely dry.

But as I've said in the previous paragraph, the most important factor is that I developed a certain playing style - whenever I play, I sound like me. I cannot and would not want to change that. Check out my video Your guitars sound the same all the time - if you cannot hear the differences (as subtle as they may seem), I cannot help it ...
